Design & Technology

Intent

To prepare pupils to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing technologies.

At Brampton we provide opportunities for pupils to design and make quality products; Giving them the opportunity to explore food and cooking techniques along with healthy eating and environmental issues within food production; To develop their design and making skills, knowledge and understanding to the best of each child’s ability; using and selecting a range of tool, materials and components.

We encourage pupils to become creative problem solvers as individuals and members of a team and to develop an ability to criticise constructively and evaluate their own products and those of others.

We prepare the children for living in a multi-cultural society by teaching consideration for other cultures which will be both important and beneficial.

Implementation:

Brampton Primary School teach Design and Technology through termly topics. Projects are selected to engage the pupils and complement knowledge built up through other curriculum subjects. Due to mixed aged classes DT is taught on a two-year rolling programme. As part of each unit:

  • The curriculum is built around essential knowledge, understanding and key skills which progress through the year groups.
  • All teaching of design and technology follows the design, make and evaluate cycle.
  • While making, children are given choice and a range of tools to choose freely from.
  • When evaluating, children are able to evaluate their own products against a design criteria.
  • Each of these steps are rooted in technical knowledge and vocabulary

Impact

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning.
  • Images of the children’s practical learning.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Pupil’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
